Then you have the southern coast, which is warmer, sunnier, and home to world-class surfing spots like Ericeira and Nazaré. It’s a climate that caters to all tastes.
RE: What’s your take on the real estate market here?
John: It’s booming—simple as that. The tax incentives for foreigners, the affordability compared to other European capitals, and the sheer beauty of the locations make it an attractive investment. Take Comporta, for example. It’s being developed into a luxury destination by big names like Discovery Land Company and Vanguard Properties, drawing in celebrities like Christian Louboutin and even George Clooney. Then there’s the Algarve—stunning cliffs, pristine beaches, and a mix of lively nightlife in Lagos or secluded escapes in Sagres. There’s something for every type of investor.
RE: Any historical aspects of Portugal that stood out to you?
John: Absolutely. I’m a bit of a history buff, and I was fascinated to learn about Ian Fleming’s connection to Cascais and Estoril. Before World War II, these towns were hubs for British and German spies, and Fleming himself found inspiration here for Casino Royale. The sophistication of the area, the luxury of places like Palacio Estoril, and the coastal charm make it one of my favorite spots.
RE: What’s your favorite way to experience Lisbon?
John: Lisbon is one of the most culturally rich cities in Europe, and its cosmopolitan nature makes it perfect for expats, especially Americans. I enjoy taking boat trips along the Tagus River—it’s a fantastic way to see the city from a different perspective. The mix of old-world European history and modern economic growth here is something special.
